Our “Math In Music Series” afterschool program promotes student achievement across all academic disciplines, fostering the development of spatial, mathematical, logical and physical abilities (when coupled with piano and performance).
Music theorists often use mathematics to understand music. The basic foundation of our “Math In Music Series” program provides a step by step instruction in math fundamentals while showing its relationship to all music. This is represented by understanding time signatures, beats and overall composition of music. To this day mathematics has more to do with acoustic than with composition, and the use of mathematics in composition is historically limited to the simplest operations of counting and measuring. The themes of mathematics as communication, mathematical reasoning, mathematical connections, and the use of music programs via computer are developed and reinforced throughout the instructional strands of this curriculum. Entire strands devoted to problem solving, and time recognition are included in the curriculum and it develops basic skills hand-in-hand with its supporting concepts. Techniques of mental arithmetic are incorporated at all levels and students understand abstract mathematical concepts and learn to connect mathematics with real life musical situations and instrumentation. Whereas some view this as a music class, in reality it is a math class with music theory and introduction to computer basics in its background. Because of our use and instruction in computers to teach this course, it is really three courses in one.

Missouri City has 2 zip codes only. 77459 has a population of approximately 33,011 with 6,047 persons between 10 – 18 years of age. 77489 has a population of approximately 32,690 with 8,639 persons between 10 – 18 years of age or a total of approximately 14,686 possible students.
The combined zip codes represent an ethnically diverse community that had been largely left behind in the economic boom that was transforming neighboring communities. Missouri City does not have any movie theaters or any other recreational facility that compares with the neighboring communities, nor does it have any public transportation of any kind. Our central location and close proximity to all of the major access roads and tolls make this the perfect location to provide this service to the city.
